The word "passion" stems from the Latin word that means "to suffer."

The Passion Week

Passion

  • From the Latin word "patior" meaning "to suffer."

The Final Days

  • Saturday - Spent time with Mary, Martha and Lazarus. (John 12:1-10)
  • Sunday - Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem on a Donkey. (John 12:12-16)
  • Monday - Clears the Temple. (Matthew 21:12-13)
  • Tuesday - Spent the day teaching in the Temple. (Matthew 21:23)
  • Wednesday - No record of events.
  • Thursday - Passover meal, Washes Apostles' Feet, Gethsemane, arrest, scourging. (Matthew 26:17)
  • Friday - Six hours on the cross. (Matthew 27:1)

At the end Jesus faced:

  • Betrayal
    • "Then everyone deserted him and fled." - Mark 14:50
  • Ridicule
    • "Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, "Prophesy!" And the guards took him and beat him." - Mark 14:64
  • Torture
    • "Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged." - John 19:1
  • Abandonment
    • "About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, 'Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?'--which means, 'My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?'" - Matthew 27:46

Why did He do it?

  • He was born for this mission.
    • "Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?" - John 18:11
  • He was committed to obedience.
    • "The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him." - John 8:29
  • He was motivated by love.
    • "Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends." - John 15:13

Conclusion:

The Passion presents Jesus as:

  • A Devoted Friend
  • A Triumphant King
  • An Authoritative Leader
  • A Dedicated Teacher
  • An Humble Servant
  • A Devoted Son
  • A Loving Savior
